Nike Soccer Cleats
Commodity Project
Recycling Process
Nike makes an effort to use recyclables in its products whenever possible. For each 2012 national Men’s soccer team, Nike made the uniforms out of recycled water bottles and 96 percent recycled polyester. Each kit (shorts and jersey) used about 13 recycled bottles, including 7 in each jersey.Nike sponsors 10 national soccer teams such as the Netherlands, Brazil, Portugal, USA, Croatia, and Turkey and they made each uniform this way.
Also, Nike has a policy to donate worn out footwear to be recycled. According to Nike, 28 million shoes have been recycled to date.
Impact
Nike's recycling policy has impacted the environment in many positive ways. On average, a plastic water bottle will take 450 years to completely degrade, so each bottle saved is one less buried in a landfill. Secondly, Nike's recycling process, specifically the Reuse-a-Shoe program, has impacted communities by providing new tracks, fields, and basketball courts. Nike truly goes the extra mile by not only recycling old shoes and cleats, but using it as an opportunity to give back.
