Advertising/Marketing

Advertising is important for all Nike products, in fact, in 2010 they spent over 800 million US dollars on advertising alone. With soccer, however, Nike uses specific advertising tactics such as the animated videos created for the World Cup in Brazil.

Nike made a video series using famous players from around the world including Neymar Jr., Ronaldo, and Ibrahimovic. This advertising technique shows true genius by showing what can happen when great players take risks and are willing to come together to save the sport they love, with the help of their Nike cleats of course!

They also use the notorious “Just do it” and their world famous Nike Swoosh. The target market for soccer cleats is different from just usual shoes. For cleats, they target a younger demographic because those are the people using them, whereas tennis shoes are worn by all ages. A way Nike targets young footballers is by inadvertently promising fame. For example, in another advertising series "Write the Future", Nike shows famous stars turned to stone, showing that by wearing their Nike cleats, they have become legends and will be remembered forever. To a young player with dreams of playing on the big stage, buying Nike cleats seems like an easy choice.

Impact

This has impacted social fashion trends worldwide with kids idealizing Nike associated stars and wanting to use their equipment. Cleats are just the beginning, Nike also sells millions of soccer jerseys around the world. The way companies like Nike advertise has an effect culturally and socially. In many countries, soccer is the most popular sport and is intertwined within the culture in these locations. Nike has sponsorships with 10 national teams, making a profit on all team affiliated gear sold in those countries.
